To celebrate the release of Peter Cusack‘s new publication ‘Berlin Sonic Places: A brief guide‘, CRiSAP are hosting a symposium exploring interventions into the city soundscape, from both planning and artistic perspectives. Guests speakers include; Peter Cusack, Sam Auinger, Lisa Lavia and Gascia Ouzounian. The symposium, City Sonic Places: experiencing the urban soundscape, will take place at London College of Communication (LCC) on Feb 2nd 2018.

This open call invites proposals for performative, mobile, workshop or intervention based sound art works to take place in the immediate environs of Elephant and Castle, as part of  this event. We invite proposals for sound art works that explore today’s city soundscape and the sonic places it comprises of. Works might respond to the following questions; How do we hear the cities in which we live? How do we deal with city environments? How do we live in these sonic places? What can artists do to contribute effectively to more human orientated urban sound environments?

‘Sonic places are the building blocks of the urban sound environment, they imply a constant interplay between the physical environment – buildings  streets, walls, spatial layout, vegetation – and the sounds, which are created by people using the place, by the infrastructures and technologies present and, even in the most urbanised of spaces, by natural elements and other living species. It’s constantly a dynamic relationship, affected from moment to moment by the normal rhythms of city life, weather and seasonal changes and over the longer term by redevelopment, changing technologies, planning decisions, cultural, social, economics and environmental trends.’ – Peter Cusack.

Location:

The commissioned works will take place outdoors, in and around the immediate environment of LCC: Elephant & Castle, Southwark, London, SE1 6SB. We anticipate that works will start from the college before moving further afield, or be situated entirely in the public spaces immediately outside the college / close by to the college. LCC is located in close proximity to a variety of public spaces, residential and commercial areas, various public transport routes, busy and quiet areas affording a wealth of sonic places to site an art work.
