Marla Hlady will facilitate a listening session, Stereo Play, where workshop participants will listen to their own field recording* ‘live’ mixed using Mic Spin microphone machines.

Hlady, a sound and visual artist, has been working on a series called Instruments – what she describes as kinetic audio tools. These tools foreground portability, which not only allows for travel between different acoustic environments but also pushes these sounds/instruments up against various social worlds.

Mic Spin uses a turning shotgun microphone and a speaker. The machine is able to move at varying speeds and in both directions and is controlled by a microprocessor. As Mic Spin’s shotgun microphone passes by a sound source, it picks up and transmits to a sound system that in turn amplifies the sound. How this sound is then heard depends on a range of factors including microphone movement and placement, sound source amplitude, room or space resonance, etc.

For this listening workshop, two Mic Spin machines will be used to actively play with the stereophonic field. What happens when the familiarity of the stereo sound image is disrupted?

*Bring a field recording no longer than 5 minutes on external hard drive. Format can be MP3, WAV, AIFF, etc. 16bit, 44.1 kHz.

Marla Hlady draws, makes sculpture, works with sites and sounds, and sometimes makes video. Hlady’s kinetic sculptures and sound pieces often consist of common objects (such as teapots, cocktail mixers, jars) that are expanded and animated to reveal unexpected sonic and poetic properties, often using a system-based approach to composition. Her work has been widely shown in solo and group performances in Canada, in the United States, in the United Kingdom, in Norway, and in Iceland. She sometimes collaborates with other artists. Hlady has a BFA from the University of Victoria and a MFA from the York University. She currently is an associate professor at the University of Toronto’s Department of Arts, Culture and Media, and is represented by Christie Contemporary. www.marlahlady.com
